  • The 1992 United States Presidential election was a quadrennial contest to elect the President of the United States held on November _, 1992. The incumbent President, Democrat Bob Dole of Kansas, was defeated by Socialist Governor Mario Cuomo of New York. The election was contested during a deep recession and following unpopular decisions by local state governments under Democratic control. Cuomo, who ran on promises to "reform, restructure and renew" several popular safety net programs, positioned himself as a "New Socialist" who embraced more neoliberal attitudes in addition to progressive social attitudes. Cuomo became the first Italian-American elected to office. The victory ended twelve years of Democratic control of the White House.
