Mary Read (1695 - 1721) was a notorious female pirate during the Age of Piracy, and one of the most dangerous pirates on the Seven Seas.

| - Mary Read oder auch James Kidd war eine Assassinin und Piratin, die sich als Junge verkleidete, um als Pirat akzeptiert zu werden. Unter dem Namen "James Kidd" gründete sie zusammen mit Blackbeard, Hornigold und Vane in Nassau eine Piratenrepublik. Neben der Piraterie widmete sie sich auch dem Assassinen-Orden, der in Tulum seinen Sitz hatte. Dort wirkte auch ihr Mentor Ah Tabai. Schließlich wurde sie gemeinsam mit Anne Bonny vor ein Gericht gestellt und der Piraterie beschuldigt. Da sie zu dem Zeitpunkt schwanger war, wurde die Hinrichtung aufgeschoben und sie wurde stattdessen in ein Gefängnis gebracht. Sie starb kurz nachdem sie ihr Kind entbunden hatte, bei der Flucht aus dem Gefängnis.

- Mary Read was originally from England and served in the British military disguised as a man.When her navy ship was taken by pirates, Read was forced to join the crew of Captain Jack Rackham. Rackham's crew also had a another female pirate who was named Anne Bonny. Bonny was initially attracted to Read thinking she was a handsome man. Captain Rackham became jealous of Read and threatened to kill her. This forced Read to reveal that she was in fact a woman. Once learning her secret though, Rackham allowed both women to remain on the crew.
