Synopsis
  • The Midnighter fights a villain named the Suicide King on top of an airship above New York City. A length of rope binds the two together, so the Suicide King leaps off the airship and begins hurtling towards his doom. He will die content in the knowledge that he will bring the Midnighter down with him. The Suicide King impales himself on the top of the Empire State Building, and the Midnighter uses his downward momentum to swing safely to the observation deck. He gathers the Suicide King's corpse and opens a door to the Carrier. On the Carrier, Jack Hawksmoor is concerned with Midnighter's bad attitude and recent brutal behavior. He assigns him a mission, which involves helping an ordinary person with an ordinary problem. He wants Midnighter to help a young girl find her missing pet cat, Pickles. While investigating the case, the Midnighter traces the cat to a group of Cyborgs wearing outdated Gamorran tech. After defeating the cyborgs, Midnighter follows the trail that leads to their employer, a mad scientist named Spencer Carlton. Carlton has a laboratory filled with animals fitted with cybernetic prosthetics. Carlton himself is a cyborg, equipped with advanced multi-functional limbs and weaponry. The two begin fighting, but the Midnighter rips off one of Carlton's cybernetic limbs and begins beating him with it. He ultimately defeats him and brings him back to the Carrier. Midnighter finds Pickles and brings the cat back to the little girl. The grateful child responds with, "Thank you, scary leather man. I love you". Midnighter returns to the Carrier and shows Hawksmoor his progress. He has taken one of the cybernetic animals from Carlton's laboratory home as a pet. As he sarcastically thanks Hawksmoor for the "consciousness raising", Midnighter's new dog urinates all over Jack's bare feet.
quotation
  • Cyborgs. Well, that explains a lot. Like the unusually strong scent of fuel and oil. What it doesn’t explain… is why the hell are cyborgs stealing cats in Suburbia?
