Hoganson played junior hockey with the Estevan Bruins and was drafted in the second round, 16th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. After playing two-and-a-half seasons with the Kings, he was sent to the Montreal Canadiens as part of the Rogatien Vachon trade. He saw little ice time with the talent-deep Canadiens. In 1973 Dale was included in the Montreal Canadiens official Stanley Cup winning picture, and was awarded a Stanley Cup ring. His name was left off the Stanley Cup, because did not officially qualify since he did not play in any playoff games.

He played five seasons there and two other with the Birmingham Bulls. Hoganson then played with the Nordiques for three more seasons in the NHL. Hoganson retired in 1982, suffering from an accumulation of injuries.
