  • After starting his career with a 1982 guest appearance in the second episode of the television detective series Cagney & Lacey (starring Meg Foster in the former role), Lowell was cast in the role of Decker in the short-lived comedy series called It Takes Two. When that series ended in 1983, Lowell did not return to episodic television until the mid-1990s. He instead focused his attention on films. On film, Lowell appeared as an actor playing Wyatt Earp in National Lampoon's Vacation, the hit 1983 comedy starring Chevy Chase and also featuring future Star Trek: Deep Space Nine guest actress Miriam Flynn. Lowell followed this with a small part as a student of Shakespearean plays in the drama Man, Woman and Child that same year. In 1984, he was seen in another National Lampoon comedy, Joy of Sex, along with Christopher Lloyd. Lowell went on to make brief appearances in such films as Real Genius (1985, with Beau Billingslea, Ed Lauter, Louis Giambalvo, Jeanne Mori and Peter Parros) and Like Father Like Son (1987, with Catherine Hicks, Dakin Matthews, and husband-and-wife team Armin Shimerman and Kitty Swink) before being given the lead role in a 1990 comedy called Elliot Fauman, Ph.D., with Lowell playing the title character, a psychologist researching the lives and personalities of prostitutes. After this film, however, he once again returned to playing small roles in films which included Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994, co-starring Mina Badie, Keith Carradine, Matt Malloy, and Wallace Shawn) and Steven Soderbergh's 1999 thriller The Limey (with William Lucking). After the latter, Lowell would work with Soderbergh on two more occasions: in the 2000 Oscar-nominated Erin Brockovich (also featuring William Lucking, as well as Scarlett Pomers, Tracey Walter, and Wade Williams) and 2002's Full Frontal. Lowell's other recent film credits consist of the 2001 crime drama The Quickie, featuring Dean Stockwell, and the 2003 science fiction thriller Contagion, co-starring Jeffrey Combs, Megan Gallagher, and Andrew Hawkes. Lowell has also become more active in television in recent years, guest starring on such programs as Titus, CSI, and ER. He has appeared in at least three episodes of the latter series, including one featuring Ellen Geer.
