  • The Labour Party was a former Political party in the Republic of Ireland. It was set in 1914 after the Dublin 1913 Lockout by Trade Unions. It was wet up as a Political sector of the Irish Trade Union Congress by Easter Rising leader, one of the causes for Independence, Socialist Leader James Connolly who believed in Ireland as a Socialist Republic. Although it was set up as a Socialist Party by the time it came to Government in 2011 it had became an Austerity Party, it made numerous promises to the Irish public, non of which were fulfilled. Despite raising taxes, introducing many new taxes, including a property tax and an attempted Water Tax and cutting wages of the Public sector and various forms of Austerity, nothing new was financed. By 2015 the Irish people almost paid the same in taxes as the French, although the quality of Services between the two were tremendous. The Party had Micheal D.Higgins elected as president in 2011-2018 as Presidents in Ireland have 7 year terms. He was not re-elected. Joan Burton served as Tanaiste (deputy prime minister) from 2014-2016
