Mercer Frey is a villain from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He serves as the main antagonist of the Thieves Guild questline. He was voiced by Stephen Russell, who voiced other characters like Lucan Valerius and Belethor. He is the leader of the struggling crime ring who is very authoritatively mean to the player when they first join and blames a Dark Elf woman named Karliah for murdering the previous leader, Gallus, who he took over from, and causing the downfall of the guild. In reality however, Mercer killed Gallus and framed Karliah for it. This is revealed when the player goes on a mission with him to the Nordic tomb known as Snow Veil Sanctum to find and kill Karliah, only to be betrayed by Mercer, who attempts to kill the player. Mercer soon began skimming funds from the Guild's treasury, which was eventually discovered by Gallus. He took over the position of Guild leader after his predecessor Gallus Desidenius was supposedly murdered by Karliah, Mercer's former partner, until the Dragonborn discovered the truth while looking for Karliah with Mercer in tow in the ruins of Snow Veil Sanctum.
