The Pilotwings universe (パイロットウイングス, Pilotwings) refers to the Smash Bros. universe's collection of characters, stages, or other properties that hail from the Pilotwings series of amateur flight simulation games. The first game, Pilotwings, released in 1991 as a launch title for the North American version of the SNES, was noteworthy for being an early example of a game that used the console's Mode 7 graphical technique to enhance realism, in a similar vein to the launch racing game F-Zero. After a Nintendo 64 follow-up, Pilotwings 64, shared the spotlight alongside Super Mario 64 as one of the only two launch titles for the Nintendo 64, the series became dormant for fifteen years, up until the third game, Pilotwings Resort, was similarly released as a launch title for the Nintendo 3DS in 2
