The successor of the communist regime's secret police, the Shūjìchù, the modern GAS has far less powers then its predecessor. The GAS is primarily responsible for counter-terrorism, counter-espionage, surveillance, internal and border security, and external and military intelligence. The GAS is officially overseen by the Orgburo of the Interior but since 2003 answers directly to the Premier, who officially appoints its Director-General. Due to the nature of its work, the GAS releases very little information on its internal structure and affairs although it is known that three separate directorates within it handle external, internal and military affairs. The GAS has been criticised in recent years due to accusations of it detaining people for political reasons, exercising torture, and running widespread surveillance programs. The GAS has also been criticised for containing many former Shūjìchù members, such as is current Director-General Xu Suiji.
