One can hold the shield button to start a match as Zero Suit Samus. When one does this, Samus' On-Screen Appearance is replaced with her suit dismantle animation, which will also produce Power Suit Pieces. Pressing "up, down, up" very rapidly on the D-Pad (while playing as normal Samus) also drops these projectiles. However, when starting an area as Zero Suit Samus in the Subspace Emissary, these pieces will not be present. The only way to get them would be to start as Powersuit Samus and use her secret taunt to transform (though there would be very little point to doing so).
