The season connects with previous seasons Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freakshow and Hotel and hints to the announced next seventh season. Summer Camp premiered on October 8th, 2016 and ran until January 22nd, 2017 with a total of 13 episodes. The season was shot in Columbia, New Jersey at the Lakota Wolf Preserve and the surrounding campgrounds of Camp Taylor. The season also welcomes infamous horror film writer/director Eli Roth who had previously worked on the horror television series Hemlock Grove and as a host for CryptTV as the writer/director for the Halloween double episode feature of the season. Summer Camp likes previous American Horror Story seasons pays homage and is directly inspired by classic horror films of a specifically selected sub-genre, in this case the slasher horror genre which was popularized and coined in name in the late 70's to early 80's. Direct inspiration and references are made to the Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween and Sleepaway Camp franchises as well as the seminal camp slasher film The Burning. The season features Kane Hodder as an antagonistic disfigured, masked killer paying direct reference to the Friday The 13th franchise killer Jason Voorhees to which he famously portrayed from 1988 to 2002 as well Robert Englund famous for playing the infamous Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
