The Chernoville disaster was an nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1985 at the Chernoville Nuclear Power Plant in France, which was under the jurisdiction of the central authorities in Paris. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western France and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is only one of two classified as a Level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear diaster. The accident caused the displacement of nearly 200,000 people from centeral and eastern France, which is still largely uninhabital due to strong amounts of radiation. The city of Pripyat were highly radiated and abandoned some few
