| - Written in the "Top 50 Anime Anime/Manga/VN/LN Characters Fatal 4-Way: Angelo vs. edwards vs. Mac vs. Zea" topic made in February 2011. When I was talking to edwardsdv about fifteen minutes before writing this, I asked if his #50 character was a loli because he said he was “starting the list off with a bang.” He said no “it's the opposite” and immediately spoiled who his #50 character was instead, ruining my enjoyment of this topic forever. Luckily, I made sure to have loli insurance and put a manly character as my 50th. Anyway, I like Sh!zuo for several reasons, one of them being that I'm pretty sure he's never not wearing sunglasses except in flashbacks. He's also always smoking and as we all know, smoking makes you cool as ****. For those failures out there (edwardsdv) who haven't seen DRRR, Sh!zuo has an incredible amount of strength, like when people get enormous adrenaline rushes and do badass **** like the time my high school psychology teacher got into a motorcycle and then picked up his motorcycle what a badass. Except he's like this all the time. Even though he's got the strength of a roided up pro wrestler, he hates violence. While this might sound a bit cliché, Sh!zuo's different in that he doesn't hesitate to fight. He also doesn't try to restrain his strength at all since he would still be critically injuring people anyway. He's also wearing a badass outfit all the time Favorite Moment: stop that mac time to get a good When They Cry character in here I usually don't like yandere/yangire characters. (shion no thanks) But Rena's my favorite character created by Ryukishi07. She's sympathetic most of the time and one of the creepier characters when she's supposed to be. It's pretty funny when she flips over cute things and wants to take them home, unlike when pedophiles such as edwardsdv do it. It's also way more badass when she holds an entire school hostage than it is when edwardsdv does it. And is it just me or is this outfit great or what Favorite Moments: USO DA! Lots of her stuff in the Atonement Arc. Satou's one of the biggest losers I've seen in fiction. He dropped out of college, has no friends, and only leaves his apartment (which his parents pay for) at night if he has to leave it all since he's agoraphobic as well as a bit psychotic. The series starts when it seems he may be able to turn his life around due to a girl he's just met wanting to "cure" him. He also finds out his neighbor is one of his friends from high school and he's a huge otaku who thinks 3D females are disgusting. They then due what any true bros would do and get to work on making an eroge. He's not all that likeable, but he's not really supposed to be. He's just a look at what the most socially removed people can be like and I find that pretty interesting. Favorite Moments: The offline meeting and stuff following it. The ending. and now readership of the topic plummets what a pimp I'm one of the few people on the board who finds School Days funny aka has good taste. Makoto's the main reason why. He's hilariously poorly written as he doesn't even have much of a personality but just does awful things with no remorse. This leads to some truly hysterical situations with the females he knows, most importantly, his girlfriend, Kotonoha, and her best friend, Sekai. I don't want to say too much just in case someone's reading this who hasn't seen the show or doesn't know about the amazing ending. Just watch it and see for yourself.Like I said before, he's not a a "good" character in anyway, but he is sure entertaining enough to get a place on my list. Favorite Moments: Pretty much everything he does from the ending of episode 3 on and of course
* spoilers in the following image, add a g to it if you want to see, don't want to accidently spoil the greatness for anyone with TTI on*
* end spoilers* I feel sort of bad having her on this list since she's kurtfisto's favorite character but whatever, I won't let some nobody user get in the way of my integrity. Plus swordz9 will get upset. Kyou's the “tsundere” of Clannad and is different from most characters in the series since Tomoya knew her well before the series begins. She generally gos around broing it up with Tomoya and Sunohara, bullying people, riding a scooter, and having a pet wild boar or something because normal pets are for children. The real reason I like her a lot is because of her dedication to her sister (even though her sister is the worst suck it swordz9) Putting her sister's wishes before her own is pretty cool especially when Ryou is so bad; that must take some serious integrity. She also throws dictionaries at people. Favorite Moments: The ending to her route. Her appearances in After Story are also really nice. I mentioned the girl who tries to help Satou with his problems in his writeup and this is her. And sorry edwardsdv, she does look sort of young but she is in fact, an adult. She starts off as a more normal character compared to Satou who wants to help him for what seem to be altruistic reasons. Sort of need to spoil some stuff here
* spoilers* The reasons I really like her has to do with what you find out towards the end of the series. She's worse off than Satou is and only gets close to him so she can tell herself someone in the world needs her. She's somewhat disturbing at times and like Satou, not all that likeable but hey
* end spoilers* WishMeLuck915 thinks she's so kawaii for a reason and it's probably because she sort of looks like a monkey Favorite moments: Finding out more about her. The first of probably several dual writeups for me where I like two characters pretty much equally and one of the main reasons why is their relationship. Anyway I still haven't read the manga but GRZ is about Kagura and Yomi who used to be friends but Yomi is now evil. By the way, the first two episodes show them trying to kill each other and then the rest of the show is backstory until the last few episodes so I didn't just ruin the show McNagah style for you if you thought I did. Their relationship is sort of like Guts and Griffith's in Berserk except I would say Kagura and Yomi are closer and neither of them is as bad as Griffith lmao. Yomi is the mature one, like an older sister to Kagura. They fight demons and **** together until stuff goes bad. It gets pretty depressing and due to the way the two go from best friends to enemies, it's got a certain feeling to it that not much else I've seen has. Favorite moments: The last fight. Yomi using a motherf***ing iron on a chain to kill bad guys. The first 14 seconds of this video. just watch that video and try to say she's bad you losers “slightly more depth than a k-on character” - meisnewbie As usual, meisnewbie is correct in that Bro isn't very deep but who has time for depth of character when you're in jail. Bro's on my list for two simple reasons. He punches people and chills with his bros. Discussion over.
* insert of gif of Bro punching someone in the face here* Favorite moments: It's hard to pick any since everything he does is badass. I guess I'll go with him taking on six guys in the first episode and winning. One of the more obscure characters on my list, Ida is a brilliant detective who just doesn't give a ****. He abuses his authority all the time, never hesitates, never gets scared, and never shows mercy to any criminal scum. That's pretty much all there is to him. He of course bros it up with his partners as well when he's not shooting criminals in the neck. He's just totally ridiculous in the best way. Favorite moments: Literally ever chapter. What manly group of characters here. I should note this is only based on the anime since I haven't read the manga yet. Ippo's not a very original character as far as shouen leads go, but one reason I like the series a lot is seeing typical shounen tropes applied to a real life setting. You get to see Ippo go from nobody high school student who gets bullied all the time to a professional boxer. The pacing of the series is so good that it doesn't even take that long. I really like Ippo's determination in reaching his goal. Sure, dumb things like his mom being hopitalized slow him down, but he doesn't give up. I also find the romance pretty funny since Ippo turns so moe about it. He's also a big Mike Tyson fan and who can't respect that? Favorite moments: His last fight in Season 1. That one badass fight in New Challenger. Working out. In my Ippo writeup, I talked about how seeing a whimpy teen becoming a badass is pretty common in anime. This one's pretty different. It's a lot less common to see a nihilistic scumbag become a hero but here we are. For those who don't know, Gantz is about a “game” that dead people get to play. If they kill lots of aliens and just be awesome in general, they can bring someone back to life or if you're as badass as Nishi, you just wish for a new weapon. Anyway, the players (are supposed to) work as a team and tons of them die. A bit into the series, Kei, sick of seeing so many people die, becomes the reluctant hero and eventually, a renowned badass leader. Seeing his progression as a character is one of my favorite things about the series. He also bros it up with other badass characters such as Muscle Rider (**** yeah)and Kato (his best friend who literally thinks Kei is “cooler than Goku and Kenshiro” I am not making this up) Favorite moments: Jumping off like a 100 foot building to impale an enemy and the excellent “bros before hos” scene. There are a few characters on my list that I like mainly because they're just totally badass. This dude is the first one to show up. His abilities are really awesome and the origins of them are pretty original and cool. His personality is one of total confidence and ruthlessness yet also fun and laid back. Not much else to say about him, he's just a total boss. Favorite moments: When you find out who he really is and his fight with Ladd. There aren't that many sociopaths I like, probably because they're usually villains and even then, there are “great” ones such as Light Yagami. Revy's partially sort of another case of just being really cool. Though, she gets some development as the series goes on. She doesn't really become a good person but she's not as evil as she was at the beginning. Angelo touched on this with his Rock right up but he's like the only person with “normal” morality she's ever known and like I said, they don't turn her into a hero or anything but there are some small personality changes. Oh yeah she also shoots people and stuff. Favorite moments: That one conversation with Rock in Season 1 and the last arc of Season 2. I guess this is sort of cheating since they share a number but I'm all for cheating. Isaac & Miria are a really big part of Baccano, not just in that they're important to the plot, but they're probably more important than anyone else in setting the tone of overall lightheartedness despite all the craziness and violence. Even though they're still criminals, they're a few of the only heroic characters in the series so of course they do lots of awesome things. They stand out in every scene they're in and that's saying a lot considering all of Baccano's great characters. Favorite moments: Pretty much everything they do is memorable to me but my overall favorite is probably when they go to the Genoard house. Harima was my choice for the funniest character ever for awhile. It was really cool seeing a harem protagonist who was the badass of the school and was just ridiculous in everything he does. He also wears a badass coat and sunglasses which lets you know immediately he's a great character. Even though he's respected by everyone in school, he's pretty awkward around Tenma which leads to some more funny stuff “Uh... your hips were made for bearing children!” Of course the ending is probably the worst ever in all of fiction. :(Favorite moments: Trying to help Tenma remember to write her name on her test, the beach episode stuff with Eri. Everytime he does something manly. Pretty much the only reason I suffered through the first three weeks of Cross Channel was because of how awesome Taichi and Miki were. All Taichi does is go around molesting every female in sight (which I thought was funny, though I know a lot of betas hate him for it) and Miki goes along with it which makes it funnier. While I did enjoy Week 4, I actually didn't like Miki as much in it. So, uh yeah. >_> Favorite moments: All the funny stuff she does. Also Week 6 because literally everything in Week 6 is amazing and makes the VN worth playing obviously. I'm not sure if anyone agrees with me but I've always seen F/SN as being all about heroism and most important characters reflect it in a different way. Lancer isn't really concerned with what might be the most good thing to do; he only wants to do whatever the most just thing to do is. Sort of like a judge or something except cooler. He was one of my favorite F/SN characters when I finished the Fate route, only because of the awesome thing he does at the end. Such a bro. Then I played UBW and that's where he really gets to shine. He makes the thing his action at the end of Fate seem way less cool just because of the multiple awesome things he does in UBW. Favorite moments: His stuff at the end of UBW is the greatest but everything he does in the route is great. I find pretty much everything Sunohara does hilarious. Most of the scenes with Tomoyo are dumb but the one where Tomoya gets Sunohara to flirt with her is amazing. His constant getting bullied and fit throwing pretty much makes him the kurtfisto of anime except way cooler. The drama in his arc is, in my opinion, the dumbest in the series but that's mainly because of Mei. Still, he's funny enough and bro enough at times for me to love him. Favorite moments: “Dating” Sanae, flirting with Tomoyo, and just generally being a moron. Also when he and Tomoya beat up the entire soccer team. Oh yeah and of course the bad end in the VN when Tomoya and Sunohara hook up. Should have been an OVA if you ask me. Obviously the inferior of the two big Urasawa protagonists but still a great character. Even though it's seen a lot in different media, I often really like the whole normal person becoming a hero thing and it's done well here. For those failures who haven't read 20CB, it's about an evil cult whose plans follow some that Kenji and his friends (mainly Kenji) made up as kids for a villain to take over the world so they could be heroes and save everyone. When the series starts, Kenji's a failed musician running a convenience store and raising his missing sister's daughter. When **** starts to go down, Kenji obviously has no choice but to gather all his bros from like twenty years ago and convince them to leave their everyday lives and help him stop the cult's leader, Friend. I didn't love him at first but he becomes totally awesome and ridiculous later on but I can't talk about that much without spoilers which I'd rather not do just read the damn series. Favorite moments: The end of the first part and pretty much everything he does later on including of course “You can't shoot a man when he's playing his guitar!” Putting a ridiculous character in an otherwise realistic series is almost always a great idea. It's even better when they're as manly as Takamura. In Takamura's first appearance, Ippo is getting bullied by some dudes and Takamura just makes them look like chumps. As soon as this happened, I knew he was going to be the best character in the series. And he clearly is. From his badass pompadour haircut, to his perfect win record, to supporting his bros, to literally defeating a bear with his fists, everything he does is just amazing and that's all there is to it. Favorite moments: Fighting a bear and his fight with Hawk. I mentioned in Lancer's writeup all the different types of heroism going on in F/SN and Saber represents it in its most traditional sense. She always does what is best for the greater good and not putting any weight on her own life. Being a typical knight, she's also really honorable. There's a badass fight in F/Z against Caster when she realizes she can't beat him on her own and she thinks something like, “If I'd known he had this type of attack, I wouldn't have fought him alone. Actually, yes I would because running from fights is for dishonorable cowards.” As you can tell from that quote, she's also manly as ****. The romance in Fate is sort of dumb but the more I found out about Saber, the more she became one of my and SuperAngelo128's top waifus. Favorite moments: The fights with Rider and Berserker in Fate and the Fate ending. Despite her appearance, Chihiro is probably the strongest character in ef. Her story is all about overcoming the adversity of having a crippling mental disorder just like great characters such as Simeon Hiese. One of the great things about ef is its pacing, she's already told her lame ass love interest her secret by like episode 3. Probably because she wanted to take off some of his sadness of him having such an awful haircut. I know there's something she does towards the end that makes some dislike her though I liked this scene as I thought it was realistic and besides it's not like the season ends this way. she also wears an eyepatch instead of getting a fake eye or something for some reason I guess because being a pirate is cool and **** blending in with society Favorite moments: Hm, despite it being my favorite part in the series, Chihiro/Renji's story probably has the lowest number of standout moments so I guess I'll say the S1 ending. picture would be spoilers >_> As much as I love Kenji, I like Otcho more. He might not do as many awesome things, but I like his personality more. He doesn't become a main character until Part 2, but everything he does is just awesome. He's got a great backstory and has to go through a ton of **** and overcomes so much adversity. I can't really say much about him without spoiling stuff so again just go read the manga if you haven't already. Favorite moments: Almost everything he does is badass but my favorite one would be the aiming part at the end. *manly tears* I usually appreciate unique characters but I also like when the creator takes another route where they take an archetype and just make them better than most. Luffy's one of those characters on my list. He's sort of like Goku and other dumb shounen main characters except he's way more badass since the majority of his character revolves around protecting his nakama. And the rest is surpassing everyone else in the world to become the king of the pirates. He's also got some pretty badass moves such as making the blood course through his veins really fast which makes him faster and stronger. Another one where he inflates his bones. Who cares if this stuff damages his body it's not like one piece characters die anyway lolol Favorite moments: End of Arlong arc which is where the series really started to become about friendship, his fight with Crocodile, and of course SAY YOU WANT TO LIVE. I mentioned in my last writeup, I usually appreciate unique characters and Senjougahara is one of the most unique characters I know of. Some people call her a tsundere, which I guess she does fit the “definition” of one but I don't know any others quite like her. While she does bully Arararagi all the time, she's actually witty about it and doesn't just yell at him or hit him. She's also really open, unlike most of them, so she and Araragi get together pretty early, which is always a plus for me. Favorite moments: Episode 12 and Episode 5 of course. Also if you don't care about future novels in the series spoilers, you should go read the ones in her mal profile, they sound amazing. Also another awesome outfit I had planned to be farther in F/Z by the time of writing this writeup, whoops. >_> Anyway, Rider is obviously one of the manliest characters in existence. Every scene he's in is just ridiculously over the top. Even just when his master gets him normal clothes (because staying in spirit form is for babies), he immediately wants to go walk outside to show all of his loyal subjects his fresh threads. In battle, he's pretty reckless and his noble phantasm is probably my second favorite in the series (including F/SN.) His master is some lame teenager but through Rider's guidance, he becomes a little cooler. Favorite moments: I'm not there yet but his last fight will assuredly be my favorite. As of now, when he challenges Saber and Gilgamesh to a drinking contest. Literally LordEmbok's favorite character. What more needs to be said? “Her first sex scene is one of the only really well-written/entertaining ones I’ve seen” - Mac Arrowny Really all that needs to be said right here. Anyway, I like her personality for the same reasons as Mac. To go back to my heroism F/SN thing, Rin's another sort. She's a member of the Magus Association and at the beginning, she believes their strict rules should always be followed. This ends somewhat quickly when she realizes doing good things is more important than whatever rules some dumb British aka Mexican people make up. So in short, she gives up the system of rules she follows for the sake of heroism. It's sort of a foil to HF Shirou where he sacrifices his heroic morals to become uh less heroic. I'm not much of a fan of the romance with her and I like her most in Fate and HF. Oh yeah, I didn't mention it earlier but I also like her reason for being mean and not getting close to people which is because she doesn't want anyone she cares about to find out she's a magus since they could get hurt by it. Favorite moments: Fight with Berserker in Fate and the excellent bro hug moment in HF. Would not be on this list if I made it today **** you season 2 Saitou's a really badass foil to Kenshin's heroic side. Saitou's still a good guy (I mean he's literally a police officer and if the FBI existed back then, I'm positive he would have been one of its top agents) but he has the badass code of “Slay Evil Immediately.” Instead of not killing anyone, he just literally immediately kills evil such as pedophiles. One of the things I really like about the series is that Kenshin isn't the best fighter and this is due to cool dudes such as Saitou holding him down. There's really not much else to say about him, he's just badass enough for him to be #20 on my list. Favorite moments: His introduction and his part at the end of the Kyoto arc. Possibly the manliest character of all time. I'm not sure what the consensus is but I didn't like Guts that much in the flashback arc when he's just a mercenary without much going for him. It isn't until his life gets some meaning where I started to love him. Griffith (who I sort of hate but I guess that's his job) plays a really great foil (jesus this has been in the past three writeups >_>) to Guts. Griffith is really charismatic, ambitious, evil, and ridiculously good looking. Guts is just some rugged looking jerk with an enormous sword who freaks people out but is really a good person. I like the series more when he starts gathering some nakama and it becomes sort of like an RPG in manga form. Onto the manliness aspect. His armor makes him incapable of feeling pain but also runs the risk of literally driving the wearer insane midbattle which is obviously a risk Guts is willing to take. He's got a cannon for an arm that can shoot arrows and ****. His sword is like eight feet long and he can use it with one hand if necessary. He also never gives up, literally never what a badass. Favorite moments: “That” scene when we first really get to see Guts' force of willpower and pretty much every boss fight he has. Holo's one of the few characters I really like mainly for their personality. By that I mean, most of the other characters on here do awesome stuff but Holo mostly just bullies Lawrence and gets drunk. Which is great. Their banter is great and while there isn't that much of it, (at least from what the anime's covered) I like the romance a lot having the immortal and mortal pair. She's also a wolfgirl as you can see and hypocrites such as LiselTestify who bullies me for liking Holo but allows “great” characters such as Mimi to exist. Favorite moments: finding out this exists For the first few volumes, Usagi Drop seemed like it could be my favorite manga if it kept it up. Unfortunately, it didn't stay quite that good but I still love it. The main reasons I love it being Daikichi and Rin. You will literally never see me say this about anything else but their relationship is adorable. For those who don't know, the series begins when Daikichi's grandfather dies. At his funeral, Daikichi finds out his grandfather had an illegitimate daughter who is now six. (Meaning Rin is technically his aunt, hot) No one there wants to take responsibility for Rin so Daikichi gets pissed and shouts at all of them and impulsively adopts her. Seeing Daikichi work hard to do the best he can in raising her and them both adjusting to their new life is really endearing. Daikichi's a pretty awkward 30 year old dude who is probably a virgin. His parenting style is understanding and gentle and it fits well with Rin who's quite shy around the rest of the family but is actually likable and fun (get it lmao.) Obviously, not everything goes perfectly for them but pretty much every chapter is touching up to a certain point. As the series goes on, it becomes less emotion driven and becomes more of a slice of life series. Daikichi and Rin don't really get much worse but they did used to be slightly higher on my list. By the way, the anime comes out this summer and I expect literally everyone to watch it. Favorite moments: Two particular scenes/lines in chapter 12 that I don't want to spoil. Tenma is what happens when you put a totally selfless heroic dude in a series full of corruption and evil. So he's obviously totally badass. He's a Japanese surgeon working in Germany. He's just sort of going through life, working his way to the top of the hospital, sleeping with his the hospital director's daughter, and broing it up with him. Towards the beginning of the series, he starts to truly value life and operates some kid (who came to the hospital first) rather than the town's mayor (who he was ordered to save.) This puts him on the director's list of dudes not to promote and causes his girlfriend to dump him but who cares he just saved some innocent child's life but whoops the kid grows up to be a serial killer. Funny how that works out. Tenma then decides to dedicate his life to killing Johan. The sacrifices he makes for the sake of doing good things are pretty incredible and not something you really see all that much in superior nippon media since the heroes are usually really powerful people. Tenma is just a normal dude without any special skills except brain surgery which don't really help when catching a serial killer. I really like how you see his transition from loser with a bad haircut into a badass.
* minor spoilers* The German equivalent of the FBI thinks he's the killer. Just like in The Fugitive starring Han Solo. So not only is he trying to get to Johan, he's trying to get away from the law. How exciting.
* end spoilers* Favorite moments: Really most of the stuff he does is great but my favorite moment would be the part when in the library when he bullies Roberto. When I first started Clannad, I didn't like anything about the first five or so episodes. Except Fuuko. I find her to be one of the funniest characters in the series up there with Sunohara. Almost every character thinks she's innocent and cute except Tomoya thinks she's not so he pulls amazing pranks to which her reactions are just as amazing. Highlights include getting her to think Tomoya turned into a girl and Tomoya getting her to beat the **** out of Sunohara with a wooden starfish. The stuff in her arc is probably my favorite drama in the series except for After Story. She's just such a great bro to her sister, Kouko, so she wants her to have the best wedding ever. Which obviously includes it taking place in some old classroom with the majority of the attendance being students Kouko has never met hell yeah.
* spoilers* I really love her return in AS. I find her to be at her funniest then and her being around adds a nice nostalgic feeling which combines nicely with the emotion of the arc. Favorite moments: The end of Kouko's wedding, all of the pranks, all of her scenes in After Story. Really everything she does stands out to me.
* end spoilers* by the way if you saw the top list I posted on mal a week or so before kurtfisto forced me to get rid of my account, you might have noticed the order of these characters is changed some since I am literally swerving everyone Anyway, what is there to say about Ed. He punches people and this seems to be more powerful than any alchemy he can do. And he's pretty damn good at alchemy. He's got a pretty straightforward personality since he's a shounen main character created for chuuni such as myself. He's traveling around with his bro Alphonse (who is literally a ****ing suit of armor) as they try to find the philosopher's stone to get their bodies back which they lost when they were trying to bring back their mother. I guess they wanted her alive since there were no other females around to make sandwiches? Who knows. Of course, since the bros are so tight, they both make the other's body high priority over their own. Ed's also really short and this leads to, in my opinion, some of the funniest comedy in any shounen. I mainly like him for his reliable traits for his bro but he's got some pretty good relationships with other characters too such as Mustang, Winry, and Hohenheim. Oh yeah, he's also totally badass and even though he's like 4 feet tall, he's totally ripped and a master of martial arts. He's also like a genius which is a nice difference from lots of shounen leads. Favorite moments: The ending and epilogue were the first to come to mind but really, everything he does is cool (I have been saying this a lot lately, expect it to continue >_>) except for some lame drama they decided to extend in the terrible first anime adaptation. I find AD to be funnier than any other fictional thing and Kitano is the main reason why. If you looked at the picture, you'll see he looks creepy as hell. This is the basis for 90% of the series' jokes and as weird as it might sound, it never gets old. NEVER Anyway, Kitano looks really weird but he's actually a really nice person which is where the Angel part comes in. On the first day of school, Kuroda, the school's #1 dude (do japanese schools really have this) is so freaked out when Kitano inadvertently attacks him, he immediately declares Kitano as the new #1. Kitano has no idea what is really going on and takes this as a great honor and symbol of friendship. Kitano then goes on to accidentally terrorize the school, students, teachers, and administrators alike. Pretty soon, some female realizes he's not what everyone thinks he is and he gets some legit friends. While he gets into fights all the time by accident, the few times where he willingly stands up for his friends and fights are ridiculously badass. I didn't mention before but he's actually pretty strong and his dodging skills and endurance are incredible because he's so used to people attacking him all the time for thinking he's a thug, drug addict, or demon. But yeah, he's mainly on here because I find him so funny. No exaggerating, I seriously burst out laughing every time there was a close up panel of his face. Not to say his personality isn't cool too, the guy is a total bro and by the end of the series, all the guys who thought he was some hardcore gangster know him for real and are real friends with him. *manly tears* Since I find the series so funny, I should probably have more characters from it on my list but I decided to just have Kitano since I usually don't like comedic characters in the same way I do others. Anyway, every character in it ranges from pretty funny to hilarious and you should read the series immediately. Favorite moments: Like I said, every scene he's in is hilarious. A few that come to mind first are the last fight, his fight with Ikuno's dad, and the “taking out the trash” chapter in the park god just writing this is making me crack up what a ****ing badass character Even though he's a shounen character, Kenshin isn't that typical. He's got a dark past of when he was some famous assassin with the nickname literally “man slayer.” At the start of the series, he's given up killing and is just a dude wandering around hospitalizing anyone that attacks him with a blunted sword. He's also like 28 which is cool of the author to not make a ridiculously powerful child as the main character. One thing I really liked from Kenshin early on is him going around pretending to be some guy with no skill. Sort of like Vash from Trigun except not as comedic and way more badass. He could kill most enemies in the series without much difficulty but instead he restrains his power to not do it. Since crippling your enemies and making them live out their lives in sorrow and shame is way cooler. His style of heroism is similar to Tenma from monster's which I like. Anyway, he's not the deepest of characters but he's the deepest shounen lead I know of. He'd probably be a little lower on my list if I reread the series today since I'm so mature. Or not who knows. Favorite moments: Everytime he does something badass but specifically his fights with Shishio and Soujiro and the end of the Tsuiokuhen arc. Favorite IRL moment: When he won the board 8's favorite anime character contest and someone (...Ankleslam101 was this you?) posted asking who Kenshin was as he somehow had no idea. Leebo86 immediately bullied him for being such a noob and then meisnewbie posted about how he was from a chuuni series.. Mental illness is rarely portrayed very well in fiction, even less so in Japanese stuff I guess because they just lock all those people up never to be seen again. But yeah, they're usually just totally crazy and villains since obviously none of them can have any morality. Cross Channel did it really well in general and with Taichi the best since we get to see his thoughts. The story takes place in a school for teens the government thinks won't be able to function in society. There's an exam to determine who has to go there and Taichi got a score so high they didn't know it was possible. Even though he's unstable, he still comes across as very human. He's not in denial about being abnormal. He can still have fun, he has friends. He can still molest every female in sight. I touched on this in Miki's writeup but I really did not like Cross Channel until the end of Week 3. Taichi being funny was the only reason I kept with it and it was so worth it. I don't want to go into much detail because of spoilers but Week 6 is one of my favorite endings ever, mainly because of Taichi being such a bro. The stuff he does for his nakama is more than most do and he's even nice enough to put up with such terrible characters as Tomoki and Mimi (mimi this cannot be a coincidence) Anyway, he's one of the better written characters outside of inferior baka gaijin literature I know of and he'd probably be higher on my list if I ever reread CC. But for now he is #10. Favorite moments: Everything in Week 6 *manly tears* For a long time, Akio was my favorite Clannad character. Since he's like 40 years old even though he looks about 18, he didn't have to develop through the series. He was just as great as he gets the whole series. He's Nagisa's dad and he's all about being supportive and totally manly. For instance, when he first meets Tomoya, Akio's so manly that he thinks Tomoya is a girl. But yeah, his role as the quintessential family man is really why I like him. Both parents are great in this way though I like Akio more than Sanae since he's funnier and has more depth. Though I guess her being female is enough of a reason for guys like SuperAngelo128 to consider her the best character in the series lmao. His relationship with all of his family is great. He knows females can't handle the truth so he always lies to Sanae about her bread being awful just so she doesn't immediately commit suicide. He's just always there for Nagisa and Mac Arrowny would obviously interpret this as her being sexually attracted to her. But yeah, I think most of the characters on my list are those who are just there for the people they care about and often are someone the other characters look up to (Bonus points to actual parents.) People who obsessively follow my character opinions (SuperAngelo128) should be ashamed for not noticing this earlier. Also, I find Akio to be one of the funniest characters in the series too, behind Sunohara and Fuuko. Favorite moments: My #1 would be the manly speech during the play what a badass. The baseball game in After Story is probably my favorite comedy part from him. I'm also fond of all of his serious talks with Tomoya. I was thinking before I wrote this and I decided to just do some cheating and include both Shirou and Archer mainly since I can't really talk about why I love Archer so much without spoilers so hell yeah Anyway, F/SN starts with our high school protagonist, Shirou. He's a pretty dumb guy, he's got these heroic ideals that are what you would expect from an elementary schooler. He wants to be able to save literally everyone and doesn't really get how unrealistic this ideal is. He stays this way throughout Fate and he probably becomes even more idealistic by the end. Archer in Fate thinks Shirou is an idiot, doesn't try to kill him (more on why later,) and actually gives him some advice on making himself more powerful. I'm not really a fan of Shirou in Fate, I don't hate him but he is pretty moronic and immature. This is my favorite incarnation of Archer though hell yeah. I should note that when I finished the prologue of the game, I saw I was some dude named Shirou. I remembered the name from the prologue but not what he looked like so I wanted to see. Google auto suggests me “shirou emiya is archer.” I was like “welp” but it actually motivated me to get through the game fast. In UBW, Shirou reconsiders his ideals some and Archer tries to kill him. I became more sympathetic to Shirou here and despite me not liking him as much in the route, it's where I really started loving Archer. In HF, Shirou screws his ideals and is similar to Archer while Archer is pretty cool but dies early. Even though he's a jackass, I really cared about Archer throughout the game. Shirou only becomes Archer through following his original ideals. Specifically, he becomes Archer when he kills Sakura in HF. Now we're getting into theory-ish territory here so newbie feel free to tell how much of this is totally incorrect. After murdering his lover, Shirou's never really able to recover. He probably allies with Ilya and then they proceed to kill everyone (including Rin) and win the war. This of course just makes Shirou worse as he becomes a hero by his definition and starts to hate himself and his ideals. I think Archer is the only character who's just well, a jackass, that I am really sympathetic towards. He's also totally badass, UBW is my favorite attack in anything and Shirou gets some great moments too. Now follows a cool theory from /a/ that poisson showed me once Archer becomes a servant and is summoned into the UBW timeline. He immediately starts to plan on how to kill Shirou and free himself. After becoming nostalgic about his old life, he lets Shirou beat him, confident that Rin will be able to get him to drop his ideals. After the UBW timeline, Archer's able to keep his memories and go into Fate/HF. This is why Archer doesn't try to kill Shirou in those routes and is more of a bro. Anyway, I feel like this writeup had too much summary but just know that everything I wrote about contributes to me thinking Archer is awesome. Favorite moments: I'll do them for both characters and by route since there are lots of great ones. Fate – Shirou projecting Caliburn and fighting Berserker. Archer staying behind to fight Berserker while injured and possibly going easy on him what a badass UBW – Shirou's fight with Gilgamesh. Archer's fight with Lancer and his conversation with Rin at the end. *manly tears* HF – Shirou stomping Berserker and his fight with Saber. One of the things I really like in TTGL is that everything is a reference and that all of the characters are archetypes, often exaggerated. Simon is the typical kid/teenager who starts off as someone who's scared all the time and then develops into a badass hero. He's my favorite character of this type. Kamina is a manly mentor dude spoilers he's not my favorite character of this type though tune in next week or so to see who is. Anyway, as the series starts, Kamina is the baddest dude around and is the only person Simon can rely on since his parents died. (does anyone else find it funny this is never mentioned again past episode 2 or 3) We find out later that Kamina isn't really as brave as he acts, he's just going around being insanely badass so Simon will think “wow what a badass this guy is my hero.” While I do think Kamina is funny and badass, I wouldn't really love him without this little bit of depth. Through Kamina's guidance and having to become a leader, Simon becomes really great. He's probably not as badass as Kamina overall because it's sort of impossible to be as totally reckless as Kamina was later on due to them knowing about how spiral power works instead of like Kamina just being stupid and badass. Favorite moments: Kamina – Episode 8 of course, the first combining scene, stealing Gurren, lots of memorable scenes. Simon – Episode 12, the fight with Lord Genome, and of course everything in the Anti-Spiral fight. What a hero. If you haven't read or watched the series, Onizuka is former biker gang member (GTO is actually a sequel to the series where he's in a gang though this is not scanlated unfortunately *manly tears*) who decides to become a high school teacher so he can possibly hook up with some hot high school girls. He gets assigned to probably the most poorly behaved class in history. And instead of quitting or even just bullying his students, he obviously becomes bros with all of them. Throughout the series, each of the important students and a few teachers get their own arc about Onizuka helping through their issues in the most over the top and ridiculous ways possible. Onizuka manages hilarious, heartwarming, and a total badass all that same time. He borders on Mary Sue territory since his only “flaws” are being a virgin and uh he's sort of dumb. This would usually bother me but I don't really care in this case since he's so great. As mac said why do characters even need flaws anyway. Favorite moments: I consider him to be the manliest character of all time so there are too many to list. I think he does something awesome in literally every scene god he is great. Highlights include defeating 100 people in arm wrestling right after each other and many of them at the same time with one arm including Heihachi Mishima and Jason Vorhees, the part where he has to take that test, all of the arc endings are pretty amazing, especially the one with the administrator at the end. – tsugumi lulling a furry into a false sense of security before crushing it to death – tsugumi outrunning a huge flood this is probably not humanly possible – tsugumi not giving a **** Honestly, Tsugumi would be #1 here if I was one of these other people trying to do this legitimately but why wouldn't I include any cheating on my list. For as weird and different as Ever 17 is, it's got good characters overall but Tsugumi is by far my favorite. E17's weird in that the real focus is the mystery/plot but the few characters it has all have a good story behind them except Sora because lmao Sora. Anyway, I always liked Tsugumi but I didn't love her until the revelations until Coco's route. I was always intrigued by Tsugumi's character. I thought I knew all there was to know about her once I finished her route (the ending of that is pretty cool too takeshi what a bro.) I still thought she was pretty cool but this of course didn't explain the differences between her in Takeshi's routes and Kid's in which she is more paranoid. I'm not very smart but I did predict some of the stuff about characters (like You being a clone actually maybe this was it >_>) during Coco's route once you found out what was going on. Though, I was pretty much totally shocked when they revealed Tsugumi was Kid and Sara's mother. And I immediately started shedding manly tears as well, of course. I really think it's a beautiful scene, similar to the field scene in After Story (but not quite as amazing of course.) It's such a weird plot twist but it makes so much sense at the same time. I wish Tsugumi was my mom so she could make me hot pockets. In summary, I find her really endearing and fun and likable. I love all of E17's twists and hers is probably my favorite. She's not as well-written as Taichi and of course, Ushiromiya Krauss but still pretty well-written for a japanese porn game* character.
* note ever17 doesn't actually have porn I don't want meisnewbie to yell at me. Favorite moments: The part I mentioned in the spoiler section and SHINE GET 64 stealing meisnewbie's tsugumi dakimakura in b8anime adventures oh ya mars give me an octo ya The Mac Militant himself recommended this series to me right after I read this “great” oneshot called Flowers. I guess he wanted to make up for how terrible that was. I got some other dudes to read it but still only like five people on the board have read it. (which is way more than have read hoshin engi suck it lefty) My point is you should read it immediately if you haven't. Anyway! The reason I love Mars so much (it's easily my favorite manga and probably my favorite piece of fiction period) is because of Kira and Rei's relationship. I've never seen another relationship (of any kind) in fiction that just feels so genuine and real. Kira and Rei themselves feel pretty real too. Kira is an emotionally withdrawn artist and Rei is an extrovert with a reputation as a player also he professionally races motorcycles what a badass. I always like romance involving someone unstable and this is one of the few I know of where both characters are. It really shows every facet and flaw of their personalities . They really just feel more like real people compared to any other fictional characters I know. Most of the issues in the series revolve around Kira and/or Rei's psychological issues and it's just so visceral and great. I should probably end this now before this just becomes a writeup on the series. Favorite moments: Mars is the only work of fiction that is flawless in my mind (counting stuff like “this part is sort of boring” as a flaw) and they're actually aren't many standout scenes that go above the usual plot or tone (which I totally love) so I will just say the entire series oh ya My queen. My waifu. My love. Sorry fellow neckbeards, I claimed her first. Much like edwardsdv my #1 character is a fictional underage female I am literally in love with. Maybe some of you think this Baby Saber thing is some kind of joke. It is no joke. As much as HeroicKrauss loves Umineko, as much as GANON1025 loves having terrible sigs, as much as Mac Arrowny loves snowballing, as much as swordz9 loves trolling the anime and manga discussion topics, and as much as Char Aznable loves Garma Zabi, BroAndChar loves Baby Saber. In fact, more than all of these combined. I could be really creepy like the Mac Militant and describe every delicious body part of Baby Saber in great detail but I don't want any haters to call the FBI on me. Or feel free to ask Mac for some good Baby Saber doujin recommendations, I'm sure he knows some good ones. Almost as important as her looks, her personality is 100% without a doubt perfection. You see, since she has no personality of her own so I can just pretend she is exactly like my ideal woman. Which she is, of course. She's there lighting up my desktop wallpaper when it's 4 AM and I've been locked into my room for the night. She knows how to work the microwave better than my mom. She is just the ideal waifu. Thank you all for reading this topic. *salutes while shedding manly tears* it's about god damn time one of the pictures was of the character crying manly tears “jeez learn the difference between scenery and characters [and simpering scallops]” - meisnewbie on Tomoya being my #1 character oh ya tomoya He starts off the series as someone who's depressed and displeased with all aspects of his life. He has a bad relationship with his father, his mother's dead, he hates school, he can't play basketball anymore (truly the worst part,) he has a bro named Sunohara but their friendship is basically them screwing around and being idiots aka the best kind of friendship why does he hate his life again. The series starts when Tomoya meets Nagisa somewhat randomly and decides to start hanging out with her, at first since he doesn't really have anything better to do. They begin an awkward friendship that mostly revolves around him helping her revive the drama club. He picks up some more friends along the way including such “great” characters as Ryou lmao. Then for the majority of the rest of the series, he goes around solving their problems. In this, he finds the family he never had. Figuratively of course. I mean who wants to actually be related to Kotomi and infect the gene pool? I love all of the relationships he creates through the series; they're the main reason I love Clannad. The romance with Nagisa is sweet at the beginning and truly touching by the end of the series. His relationship with her parents is sort of funny in that they pretty much become Tomoya's parents as well. Funny because they are his girlfriend's parents so it's like figurative incest mac are there any doujins about this. All of the friendships are really nice too. They're a bit formulaic but the conclusion to most of the arcs is great. Still, I'm not a fan of some of the drama like in the Sunohara and Yukine arcs. Also those garbage non-canon romances with characters such as Kyou and Tomoyo aren't really a factor for me. suck it shippers (kurtfisto lmao) His relationship with his dad is pretty sad but I love the resolution of their problems when they finally make up in like hundreds of episodes or so. I love how he's portrayed as a father. He's far from perfect, which isn't something you'd expect. I actually sort of hated him when I saw the first post-timeskip episode. He's really immature and it takes five years for him to get it together. Still, this is my favorite parent-child relationship in fiction. The redemption scene in the field is my favorite fictional scene ever, with its beautiful mix of emotions. The following scene in the train is amazing too. Man I am pretty sure I have written papers shorter than this writeup Anyway, on his own, he's not as awesome. He would still certainly be on my list if I weren't cheating here. Though I guess this probably isn't even cheating but I will call it as such anyway. His relationships (I have been saying this word a lot) with every character in the series are what really make him for me. I guess this is basically a product of being a VN main though and not legitimate writing or anything lmao. He represents everything I love about Clannad so in this way you are damn right this writeup is cheating. Oh wow I totally forgot to mention his comedic elements. I think he's pretty hilarious overall. His bullying of Sunohara and Fuuko among others, is pretty much always great. Bonus list top 11 because I can't just limit it to 10 Clannad moments that may or may not involve Tomoya oh ya these spoiler things need to be bigger I can't put this on the actual list in good faith but an honorable mention to the scene where Kyou and Ryou realize they have no chance with Tomoya. Maybe I only think this scene is so amazing because of this picture of Nagisa trolling the **** out of them. 11. Tomoya finding out the school is going to be torn down. It's not a really huge moment but I still love it as it shows how much he's changed since the beginning of the series and the sentimentality of it is perfect. 10. The basketball game. Tomoya overcoming his injury after Nagisa's encouraging words is badass. Too bad he didn't do a slam dunk or this would be higher. 9. Tomoya and Nagisa's first embrace. Great but would have been better if Tomoya was embracing his bro Sunohara instead though. 8. Fuuko's return. The moment itself is pretty sweet and I love everything with her in AS. There's a certain nostalgia with her being around and I think she fits in very well given the overall seriousness of the arc. The part where she tells Tomoya she will hang out with him whenever he wants is hilarious and amazing. 7. Tomoya and Nagisa's first meeting. I didn't care about this at all the first time I watched the show. (You probably know this but I hated the show altogether until towards the end of Fuuko's arc.) The times I've rewatched the series though, this part is really sweet knowing what they go through together in the future. 6. The proposal. Far from a typical proposal, it's still really nice. Gets bonus points from Tomoya punching the **** out of a wall right before it. How could Nagisa ever say no. I was always a bit let down by the fact we never got a wedding episode. It wouldn't have fit with the tone of the series at this time but god dammit it would have been amazing. 5. The play. I only started liking Nagisa during this arc and this scene really solidified it for me. Her failing but being able to continue through the badass speeches of Akio and Tomoya was awesome. Also I love how Sanae was just sitting in the audience watching Nagisa cry for like five minutes without saying anything. XFD what a parent. 4. Kouko's wedding. I mentioned earlier I didn't like the show much until towards the end of Fuuko's arc. This is when I started loving it. (Too bad Kotomi's arc started the next episode lmao) Fuuko reappearing and giving a manly speech, Tomoya showing emotion and that he really does care about these people, Sunohara wearing a mother****ing yellow tuxedo. What more could you ask for really. 3. After Story epilogue montage thing. I know some people absolutely hate AS's ending and most don't really love it either. I always have. It's not very good writing and I can totally understand why people wouldn't like it but I think it fits the series perfectly and hey it was sort of foreshadowed so there. The characters just deserve better dammit and this is what the ending is. Love the song that plays during it too. It is called “The Palm of a Tiny Hand” go listen to it. 2. Nagisa's death. The most depressing (in my opinion) scene in the series. Quite different from the happiness on the rest of my list. This scene doesn't make me cry like some of the others do but it makes me feel like I was punched in the stomach or my mom just told me we were out of ravioli AND hot pockets. Like “jesus she is dead how can we go on from this” aka “jesus what am I going to eat for breakfast at 9 PM” Tomoya being so happy about Ushio and then being delirious/trying to convince himself Nagisa is fine is tragic. 1. Field/train scenes. I cheated and combined them so there. Anyway, Tomoya apologizing to Ushio was great itself but her reply is what really made it for me. Until Tomoya and Ushio cry together and it becomes my favorite scene ever. The feelings of both “oh ya they are going to be alright now” and “god dammit why can't nagisa be alive and none of this would have ever happened” are great and make me feel ambivalent emotions. The following scene on the train is also amazing where Tomoya tells Ushio about Nagisa. “Mommy was a crybaby.” *manly tears*
