The German city of Greifswald was quite close to the base of the Reich Rocket Force in Peenemünde. Therefore, many officers and pilots had their families living in the city. Due to the city's proximity to the RRS base, which was the target of explosive-metal bombs, Greifswald suffered heavy radioactivity during the 1965 war with the Race. Many of the buildings were destroyed in the heavy fighting and the few survivors were deprived of basic amenities, a fate shared by many urban centers in post-1965 Germany.
