Pick Lock is a core rogue ability learned at level 24. It is a skill that allows a rogue to open locked chests, doors, and lockboxes. As of Mists of Pandaria it appears as a Lockpicking icon in the Spellbook. Rogues start at an initial level 120 lockpicking skill; character leveling will automatically increase it. There is no longer any need to pick locks to get this skill up and there are no profession-like proficiency levels to be trained; rather, the skill is capped at five times the rogue's current level.

- The Lock Pick skill allows Bards and Rogues to open locked doors, chests, and other interesting things. The skill is most prominantly known for being a Rogue skill but Bards can become very proficient in using it as well. You must have a set of Lockpicks in hand to use the Lock Pick skill. A basic set of Lockpicks can be purchased from certain merchants or created through the Smithing tradeskill. Special lockpicks with Lock Pick skill bonuses, such as the Mechanized Lockpicks, can also be purchased, created through tradeskills, or found throughout your travels.
- Characters with Pick Lock skill can attempt to pick a lock using a special lock-pick tool or an improvised tool made from wire, a small knife, or something similar. All locks have a Lock Rating of up to 100%, which is subtracted fron the character's Dex characteristic to give the chance of success. The higher the lock raing, the more difficult it will be to open the lock. Characters can acquire the Pick Lock skill more than once, giving them pick lock modifiers of +10, +20, +30, etc. The modifier is added to the chance of success.

All locks have a Lock Rating of up to 100%, which is subtracted fron the character's Dex characteristic to give the chance of success. The higher the lock raing, the more difficult it will be to open the lock. A successful test indicates that the lock has been opened. Up to 3 unsuccessful tests can be made with the same character, after which all further attempts will fail automatically. Each attempt takes the equivalent of 1 round or 10 seconds. Characters can acquire the Pick Lock skill more than once, giving them pick lock modifiers of +10, +20, +30, etc. The modifier is added to the chance of success. Characters without Pick Lock skill should be allowed one attempt at a lock, with a -30% penalty.
