He sent a second force through the woods on the sides of Topanga Canyon to try to sneak past the Topangan defenses. However, Connor Tillman spotted them while patrolling and managed to bring warning back to Topanga village. A detachment from Fernwood was passing through on its way to the Glenview border wall and deployed to fight the second threat. An exchange of arrow fire led to a Valley soldier taking an arrow between the pit of his stomach and his navel. He collapsed and started screaming animal sounds of pain. Conner rushed forward with the rest and exchanged a few sword strokes with another Valley soldier. The man seemed unsettled by the screams of his fallen comrade and fled as soon as he could. With their ploy of trying to slip past the Topanga defenses thwarted, the rest fled back into the woods too. Conner watched as a Fernwood soldier approached the gut shot Valley man. He didn't hear the exchange but it was obvious the injured man was asked if he wanted to be patched up as best as they could or put out of his misery. When the Fernwood soldier drew his knife and slit his throat, Conner also knew what the answer was.
