  • The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros were united in the Targaryen Conquest, three centuries before the events of the Game of Thrones TV series. They entire geographic region south of The Wall is still referred to as "the Seven Kingdoms" even though they are no longer seven independent kingdoms. The Targaryen kings melted down the swords of their defeated enemies and had them forged into the Iron Throne as a symbol of their reign. The Seven Kingdoms cover most of the entire continent of Westeros, excluding only the uncharted lands beyond the Wall (which is the only place where particular attention is made to the distinction between "Westeros", the continent, and "the Seven Kingdoms", the realm south of the Wall). The Targaryen kings also established two new administrative regions in their realm: the Riverlands (which used to be a contested borderland that frequently changed hands between neighboring kingdoms) and the Crownlands (ruled directly by the Iron Throne, carved out of neighboring kingdoms to support the new capital city King's Landing). Therefore despite the name, "the Seven Kingdoms" anachronistically contains nine administrative regions. Each of these (except the Crownlands) is ruled by a Great House such as the Starks or Lannisters, who in turn are commanded by the King on the Iron Throne in King's Landing. The Seven Kingdoms range from the snows of the North to the sandy deserts of Dorne in the south, from the fertile fields of the Reach to the gold mines of the Westerlands, even to the barren and rocky Iron Islands. Each of these regions have their own unique costumes and fashion styles, as well as certain sub-groups within these larger regions.
