Synopsis
| - The story opens with the Bulleteer standing in front of a mirror, pondering the events that brought her here. She thinks of the last time she saw her husband alive - on a gurney, as he suffered from the accident that almost gave him superpowers.
Alix Harrower was a care worker with autistic children. Her husband, Lance, was a scientist, working on a substance called "smartskin", a substance which can bond with the collagen in skin and make it unbreakable. He intends to use it to become a superhero, but it doesn't work. Alix doesn't mind.
Lance Harrower has a fixation with becoming a superhero. He thinks he will base his costume on a World War 2 era husband & wife team, Bulletman & Bulletgirl. He also spends a lot of time late in his lab, ostensibly to check his research notes. He tries to interest Alix in his fixation, on the grounds that smartskin doesn't age and her face "never used to have all these little lines, you know?"
Alix stays away from her husband, but comes home one day to discover that he has somehow made his smartskin formula work. Unfortunately, the silover smartskin is blocking oxygen flow, and he asks her to call an ambulance. She touches him, and the smartskin spreads from him to her...
She regains consciousness on the operating table. Her skin and her husband's are now indestructible, but doctors are to help Alix with intravenous drips because her wedding ring prevented coverage of the skin beneath it. Her husband was not wearing his ring, and dies. At his funeral, a medical practitioner points out that dozens of people die every year from accidents they think will give them superpowers, and the medical professionals who deal with it have little sympathy for them.
Days pass. Alix sees a psychiatrist. Under his questions, she reveals that she checked her husband's computer to save his notes, and found that he was conducting an e-mail affar with "Sexy Sally Sonic", a superhuman working for a soft-porn website. His efforts were mostly directed at her affections. This news shocks Alix, and she crashes through the lab's walls in a desperate attempt to kill herself. However, she finds a wrecked train, and decides to help the passengers. When they ask who she is, she replied "I'm a super hero."
She has decided to fulfill her husband's twisted dreams, on her own terms. Her psychiatrist approves. She begins her career as a the costumed adventurer known as the Bulleteer.
