He alongside four other doctors, David Woods, Elizabeth Cortland, James Norm, Joni Ryan, was dispatched to South Sudan, more specifically to the village of Togu. However, during one of their routine treatments to the villagers, their treatment area was ambushed by soldiers led by the Shilluk General Ajak Gadet, with Pitts, alongside two other doctors being killed in the attack. His body was then torched alongside that of James Norm by the soldiers. His alongside James' and Lt.
