  • The United States presidential election of 2016 was the 58th quadrennial presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The Democratic nominee, incumbent Vice President Joe Biden, and his running mate, the Senator Mark Warner from Virginia, were elected defeating the Republican nominee, the Senator for Kentucky Rand Paul, and his running mate, Representative Bill Johnson of Ohio. Capitalizing on a growing economy and President Barack Obama's popularity, Biden ran a cautious campaign based around the maintenance of Obama's policies. The Republican Party suffered from internal fractures however, Rand Paul having to compete fiercely for nomination from both more moderate and conservative contenders. Paul only secured the nomination just prior to the Republican National Convention. Biden would go onto win a close victory, both in the electoral college and popular vote, with 281 to 257, although Paul would close the gap from Republican results in previous elections. Biden became the first sitting Vice President since George H. W. Bush in 1988 to win the Presidency.
