On the latter one he also worked as producer and director. On most of his projects he worked with fellow The Next Generation producer and writer John Mason.

For his work on the drama The China Syndrome, Gray earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Screensplay, a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Screenplay - Motion Picture, and a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Drama Written Directly for the Screen in 1980. In his latter years, Gray became a campaigner for legalization of drugs, authoring the book Drug Crazy: How We Got Into This Mess and How We Can Get Out. He died on 30 April 2013. [1]
