The founders originally resided in the experimental government station near Acre, and moved to the permanent location in 1950. In August, 1988, Shomrat became notorious for a much covered rape case. Six teenage boys had sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl over a period of several days in the kibbutz. They were acquitted by a District judge in Haifa, but the decision was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Israel. Shomrat has a successful furniture factory, operating several stores in Israel.
