East African States, officially the United Nations of East Africa (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Yafrica), is a country in East Africa that is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, Sudan on the north. To the east it borders the Indian Ocean. The nine former British colonies united in 1974, forming the Union. In 1996 government offices were transferred from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar, making Zanzibar the country's political capital. Dar es Salaam remains the principal commercial city.
