The 31st Olympic Games begin August 5, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, where the 555 members of Team USA will compete for the international glory — and domestic hero status — that accompany Olympic success. This year, the U.S. is sending a record 292 women to the Olympics, the most any country has ever sent. Among those 292 are, to Western Pennsylvanians, some familiar faces: Christa Harmotto Dietzen, Meghan Klingenberg, Amanda Polk and Leah Smith. Hailing from Hopewell Township, Richland Township and Oakland, the women will be bringing a little black and gold — alongside their red, white and blue — to Rio.

The United States left the 2012 Olympics with 104 total medals, 46 of which were gold. One-hundred and ninety-one Olympians are returning, including 108 medalists from London, and 68 athletes are seeking to defend their gold medals. Although just one of the Pittsburgh-area athletes is a returning Olympian, all four enter as members of top-ranked teams with legitimate chances to finish atop the podium.
