Captain LaCroix said "Send a distress call!" The communications officer sent out a distress call. Then Captain LaCroix ordered the lifepods launched. His first officer replied "There's only enough lifepods for half the crew aboard, Captain!" So half of the crew went into the lifepods and the other half stayed aboard the ship. The USS Amazon Queen exploded with Captain LaCroix and half the crew still on board. The remaining half of the crew were rescued by the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk. The Federation held an inquiry about this incident and ruled that no Federation starship should leave Spacedock without all of her escape pods.
