| - El Guason siempre ha sido un villano peligroso gracias a que sus métodos son tan impredecibles como el viento; pero cuando una serie de victimas relacionadas a el comienzan a aparecer descuartizadas, es deber de Batman investigar que es lo que esta pasando. Siguiendo una pista, el héroe llega hasta la habitación de un hotel, donde el payaso acaba de asesinar a un hombre que viste una mascara hecha con carne, el cual quiso realizarle "una operación". Sin perder tiempo, el payaso aprovecha para escapar luego de haberle arrojado una bomba a Batman que termina incendiando el edificio. Bruce decide salvar a una niña atrapada por las llamas en vez de seguir a su enemigo, pero en ese momento llega la policía y tratan de capturarlo, pero rápidamente Batman los evade y parte de la escena.

| - * This issue contains several references to Frank Miller's Dark Knight, specifically his characterization in The Dark Knight Returns where he is shot at on sight by the police department. The opening splash page is an homage to another panel by Jim Lee. During his fight with the SWAT team, he kicks a man very similarly to a classic Miller panel. On the subway train, his fight with the Joker heavily resembles a different one.

| - Batman tracks down the Joker to an apartment where he is killing Dollmaker's son in the nude. Batman tries to apprehend the Joker but he uses an explosive to escape. Batman is about to go after him when he hears an eleven year old girl asking for help from the fire. The police enter and Batman fights them briefly until an officer escorts the girl outside and Batman flees. A police helicopter open fires on Batman, but he escapes. Batman wants to talk to Gordon about the Joker and Gordon tells him that the girl mentioned Joker's hideout is above Roscoe's pharmacy. Batman thinks it may be a trap but heads there anyway. The police have got there before him and have entered the building. They think they see the Joker sitting in the middle of the room but it turns out to be an explosive-filled dummy. After it goes off, killing the police, the Joker hops a train. Batman pursues him and engages him in hand-to-hand combat. The Joker sticks Batman with knives twice, but he still apprehends him. He drops Joker off at Arkham Asylum. After Joker is left alone, the Dollmaker enters the room. Joker tells him that he killed his son because he insists on only Dollmaker's expertise. Dollmaker says very well, and tells him this will hurt a great deal. Then Dollmaker cuts off Joker's face. The Joker is ecstatic with the pain.

Bruce decide salvar a una niña atrapada por las llamas en vez de seguir a su enemigo, pero en ese momento llega la policía y tratan de capturarlo, pero rápidamente Batman los evade y parte de la escena. thumb|left|292pxEn la Baticueva, Alfred le recuerda que nuevamente se ha olvidado de la cita que tenia con Charlotte Rivers, pero Bruce le pide que le mande un regalo junto con una disculpa, pero en ese momento toda su atención esta puesta en el Guason. Mas tarde se reúne con James Gordon, quien le pide disculpas por el accionar de sus hombres, quienes siguieron ordenes exclusivas del alcalde. Batman por su parte le pide interrogar a Olivia Carr, la niña que salvo del incendio, pero Jim le dice que es imposible aunque le cuenta que durante el interrogatorio ella dijo que escucho al Guason decir que se estaría escondiendo en la parte de arriba de una farmacia en el centro. Sabiendo que algo va mal, ya que esa no es la forma de actuar del villano, Batman parte a la escena, y llega al mismo tiempo que la policia. Los oficiales ingresan al lugar donde supuestamente esta escondido el payaso, pero solo encuentran un muñeco de él, que termina explotando y matando a todos los policias. En medio del caos Batman logra divisar al Guason en la escena y lo persigue hasta un tren donde comienzan a pelear. Luego de abandonar el transporte, continuan con su pelea en donde el Guason logra apuñar varias veces a Batman, pero finalmente el heroe vence. El Guason es enviado nuevamente a Arkham, en donde el Dr. Jeremiah Arkham se propone una vez mas curarlo por completo. Una vez que el payaso se queda solo en su celda, nota que esta acompañado. Supuestamente el Guason se hizo capturar para poder ofrecerle a su acompañante un escenario digno en donde pudiera realizar su trabajo. Dollmaker, según es identificado el hombre, comienza a trabajar sobre el Guason y termina extrayéndole el rostro, el cual los dos contemplan como símbolo del renacimiento de ambos.
