From the day it was built, the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge was known to have problems in the high winds that often seep though that part of the sound. In 1940 during a wind storm, the bridge was rocked so hard, it fell into the sound. Rumor has it that the insurance payments on the structure had been embezzled, so the full cost of the catastrophe had to be made up by taxpayers.
