August Penguin is a yearly gathering of Israeli people interested in Free Software. August Penguin is held in or near Tel Aviv in early August, usually on a Friday, since 2002. It lasts one day and includes technical talks, Free Software trivia competitions and a keysigning party. Since the establishment in 2003 of Hamakor, an Israeli not-for-profit for promoting free software, it has taken charge of organizing the annual event. The first annual Hamakor Prize for free software-related achievements was awarded to Maxim Iorsh at AP III (2004) for his work on the Hebrew font package Culmus.
