  • Claude Desmarais was elected to Parliament in August 3308. He lost his seat in September 3317, after having served four terms. In early 3318, Desmarais was appointed Chancellor of the College of Halonen-Nyrup. He remained Chancellor until 3331 when he stepped down to run for Parliament. His 13 year tenure was the longest in university history. In 3331, the Liberals suffered massive losses but Desmarais managed to win his seat. Shortly following the elections, he contested the leadership but was narrowly defeated by Albert Tonks. While Tonks did not appoint Desmarais to the cabinet, he did make him his Chief of Staff. Following the 3339 elections, Desmarais challenged Tonks and won the leadership at an extraordinary congress. Desmarais led the Liberals to two Liberal victories and served as Prime Minister for nearly a decade. He resigned as Prime Minister following the fallout from the scandal that forced Foreign Affairs Minister Mary Miller from office. A high level official from the Foreign Affairs ministry leaked highly confidential information to the press. Miller was brought before Parliament to discuss the issue and ultimately resigned from her position. While Desmarais was not part of the scandal, he felt responsible and resigned.
