Toby Avery's mother brought him up to believe that his father was an officer with the British Navy. After she died of a fever, he then went to find his father. In 1699, Toby managed to stow away on his father's ship, Fancy, and went unnoticed until the ship was attacked by the Siren. He was discovered, and learned the truth: his father was a pirate. Toby had a fever which caused the Siren to mark his hand with the black spot and he ended up in the Siren's hospital with Rory. Als er die Wahrheit erfährt, ist er sehr enttäuscht von seinem Vater und stellt ihn zur Rede, der weicht ihm jedoch aus. Toby ist an Typhus erkrankt, wodurch er die Aufmersamkeit der Sirene auf sich zieht, die scheinbar alle Kranken und Verletzten entführt. Henry Avery soll seinen Schatz über Bord werfen, da die Sirene eine spiegelnde Oberfläche braucht, um zu erscheinen. Henry behält heimlich einen Teil des Schatzes und so wird auch Tobey entführt. Jedoch ist er nicht tot, sondern von der Sirene, die eigentlich das medizinisches System eines Raumschiffs ist, in eine Krankenstation gebracht worden, wo sie ihn am Leben erhält. Der Elfte Doctor, Amy Pond und Henry verletzen sich absichtlich, um die anderen Mitglieder der Crew, sowie Toby und Rory Williams zu retten. Da Toby das Schiff nicht verlassen kann, da seine Krankheit ihn dann töten würde, verbleibt Henry auf dem Raumschiff. Henry lernt das Schiff zu fliegen und so reist fortan mit seinem Vater durch den Weltraum. Gemeinsam kommen sie dem Doctor bei der Schlacht von Demons Run zu Hilfe (A Good Man Goes To War).

By this time, it was apparent that he had somehow been cured of the fever judging by the fact that the tube that he used onboard the spaceship was no longer connected to his throat.
