  • In media fandom, an alternative universe (also known as an alternate universe) is one in which canonical facts are deliberately altered. The term is commonly abbreviated to AU. AU fan fiction is a type or form of fan fiction set in such an alternative universe. Stories of this type allow the author to explore possibilities that might have arisen had circumstances or decisions been different. Typically, the alterations involve significant incidents in the source material, so that the implications of pivotal changes to canon can be logically extrapolated. For example, AU fan fiction often examines the effect of pivotal changes on the outcome of subsequent canonical events.

In the Forever Knight universe, pivotal events that have engendered AU fiction include the death of Schanke in "Black Buddha, Part One", the death of Vachon in "Francesca", and LaCroix's acquiescence to Nick's request not to bring across his sister, Fleur, in the flashback to "Be My Valentine". Furthermore, stories in which one of the mortal characters is brought across prior to the series finale have also to be considered AU fiction.
