abstract
  • The deputy leadership election for the APR was held in 3887 following the resignation of David Ashdown due to ill health. He had been made deputy leader of the party by Robin Goldsmith after the founding of the party. Ashdown would continue to serve as an MP though until the next election. The deputy leader post is not seen as important as the position of leader, meaning the party refuses to spend large amounts of money balloting all members, so instead chooses to ballot sitting MPs as the deputy leader generally takes on the role of party whip. Meaning who ever takes on the deputy leadership post it helps that they are liked by the parliamentary party. Only two MPs entered the race to succeed Ashdown that was Janice Parker the MP for the Falristan Province and the MP for the Lagard Province, Thomas Pughs. Pughs and Parker were both popular figures amongst the parliamentary grouping, however Pughs was seen as a poor public speaker, compared to Parker who seemed quite a popular figure amongst the public as well. In the end, 14 of the 24 MPs in parliament backed Parker giving her 58% of the vote.
