  • Lieutenant-Colonel Colin George Blanchard OBE (1890-23 October 1959) was an army officer and local politician in the Deptford area, Born in Lewisham, he joined the regular army, and served in the British Expeditionary Force in World War One. He became involved in politics, and was chairman of the Deptford Labour Party from 1931. A member of Deptford Borough Council, he served as Mayor of Deptford for six consecutive terms throughout the Second World War. He also commanded a company of the Home Guard during the conflict, and obtained the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In the Birthday Honours 1942 he was awarded the OBE for "services to Civil Defence". He remained a member of Deptford council until his death, and was serving a seventh term as mayor when he died suddenly at his home in Brockley.
