Iroquois Chiefs convened at Johnson Hall in 1774 to negotiate Johnson buying their land. Kanen'tó:kon alerted Ratonhnhaké:ton to the meeting, and he assassinated Johnson when he ordered his men to threaten the Chiefs with muskets. He promptly fled and dived into a lake. The area was populated by elk, bears, foxes, and hares, making it a profitable hunting region.
