An ultralift was a one-man atmospheric airspeeder that was often flown by recreational pilots. The craft consisted of a single repulsorlift engine, an open-air cockpit, and wings that were mounted above the seat and engine. Due to the light-weight nature of the craft, they were affected by air turbulence and proved to many newer pilots to be tricky to maneuver.

After his retirement, Tuffass, a Gand former Gunnery Sergeant in the Republic Marines, would fly ultralifts on the weekends. The activity did not put as much stress on his arthritic joints, and he enjoyed the challenge of piloting against a strong headwind.
