Himantes are straps of ox hide wrapped around the hands of boxers which did not cover the fingers, functioning as early ‘boxing gloves’ for ancient Greek boxers. The straps have the effect of strengthening the wrists against the blows. They were originally soft, but later were replaced with hardened hide straps and covered with a layer of wool in the interior to protect the hands.
