The hypothetical distinction could only be awarded to 17 hurricanes in the past century. However, a trend has been ongoing since Hurricane Katrina that all Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes have reached a windspeed of at least 175 MPH. The most recent such storm was Hurricane Felix in 2007.
