A leading mechanic is a term for a leading rating in the engineering division of some 23rd-century starships, such as the USS Mumbai. (TOSS) The term comes from pre-space-flight navies of Australia, Canada, and other countries on Earth. The corresponding United States Navy term is petty officer third class. John bet-Orlek and Mansume da Silva were leading mechanics on the USS Mumbai. (TOSS #29 "[/ Bottom-up]")
