The Republic of Luisiana was formed from territory that was originally part of the French colony of New France. Spain acquired the territory in 1762. In 1807, Spain sold the territory north of the Missouri River to Virginia. In 1828, Spain sold the portion north of the 42nd parallel to Virginia in exchange for Virginia's assistance against Mexico's claims on Luisiana (the Luisiana War).
