The African Possessions of the British Empire included South Africa, British West Africa consisting of the costal lands around the Gulf of Guinea and separated from South Africa by Portuguese Angola, and British East Africa along the east coast from Portuguese Mozambique to and including the Horn of Africa but excluding Madagascar which was part of the Franco-Spanish Holy Alliance. Ethiopia was considered politically part of British India.
