Following the berserk Evangelion Unit-03's analysis, a picture of something matching the structure of hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrier protein in blood) appears on the monitor. The Magi appear to factor in genetic pattern while calculating the reawakened Lilith's blood type. Despite the name and hemoglobin allusion, there is no concrete indication that "blood type" has anything to do with physical blood.

  • Blood type is a characteristic of Human red blood cells and is determined by the presence of specific surface antigens. Blood type designations commonly use two systems for determing blood transfusions: the AB designation and the Rh factor designation. There are four AB types and two RH types, yielding eight types: O+, A+, B+, AB+, O-, A-, B-, AB-. O is another type of designation which is given to blood which doesn't possess any A or B antigens.
  • Blood type is a way of classifying the proteins on red blood cells in large groups of individuals that will invoke an immune system response if the blood is transfused to another individual. The concept behind a blood transfusion to treat blood loss is ancient. However, for reasons that remained not understood, most transfusions resulted in widespread clotting and an inflammatory response that almost always resulted in the patient's death. Blood types are unique to humans and, as a result, humans may not receive transfusions from any other animal.
  • Stemming back to the findings of Austrian scientist Karl Landsteiner in 1900 and growing from its failed use as a means to predict the temperaments and reactions of certain races, the theory’s modern popularity originated with publications by Masahiko Nomi in the 1970s. In the modern world, although there is no proven correlation between blood type and personality, it remains popular with many matchmaking services, much in the same way astrology horoscopes are used in the west.

However, as experimentation continued, it was discovered that blood cells have protein covers that differ due to the genetic makeup of the person. Two of these, which were dubbed factor "A" and factor "B" were discovered in quick succession. Later, a third, called "Rh" after the Rhesus monkeys where it was first isolated, was also discovered. Any given individual may have none, one, any two, or all three of these proteins on the surface of their own red blood cells. A person is assigned type "O" has neither "A" nor "B" proteins, and the "Rh" factor is indicated by a "negative (-)" or "positive (+)". As such, a person with none of the proteins is "O-" (Oh-negative) and a person with all three is "AB+" (Ay-Bee-positive). A person may receive a transfusion from anyone who does not have an incompatible protein on their red blood cells (although in practice, as much as possible, a person is only given blood of exactly the same type). People with type O- may therefore be donors to any other person, whereas persons with type AB+ may get a transfusion from any other donor. If a person gets a mismatched type, the immune system will treat the blood as a foreign material and provoke a full immune response. Blood types are unique to humans and, as a result, humans may not receive transfusions from any other animal. Other parts of blood, such as plasma, platelets and other blood products do not need to be typed. James Wilson's blood type is O-. Gregory House has blood type AB+. Chris Taub's blood type is O-. In the episode You Don't Want to Know, the patient was given type AB+ blood when he was really type A+. His lupus caused a false positive on the test for blood factor B.

Captain Archer told Loomis and T'Pol that his blood type was B-negative. (ENT: "Carpenter Street") Likewise, Julian Bashir had type B-negative blood. (DS9: "In Purgatory's Shadow") Doctor Phlox found it easy to synthesize Burzaan's blood type for a transfusion after the Eska was attacked by a drayjin. (ENT: "Rogue Planet") Vulcans seem to have used a similar system for blood type designation, as both Spock and Sarek had T-negative blood. It was a rare type, even for a Vulcan. (TOS: "Journey to Babel" ) Curzon Dax and Jadzia Dax both had different blood types. Bashir cited this as evidence of how different Trill are to each other, despite carrying the others memories. (DS9: "Dax") After being changed into a Solid by the Great Link, Odo's blood type was O-negative. (DS9: "Broken Link") In 2267, at a loss to understand why Pavel Chekov was not aging like the rest of the Gamma Hydra IV landing party, James T. Kirk wondered aloud whether it was "his youth, his blood type, his heritage, his glands, his genes?" (TOS: "The Deadly Years" )

It is also common for video game series like Tekken, Princess Maker, and Love Plus to feature blood types as attribute templates in their character customization modes.
