The second C subclass was the first class of Royal Navy cruisers to be fitted with geared turbines. New engines and an improved boiler arrangement led to the elimination of one funnel and a slightly increased top speed, and the torpedo tubes were now mounted under the water line. Also, the belt armour was upgraded.
