Contrary to a widespread misconception, the shaped charge does not depend in any way on heating or melting for its effectiveness, that is, the jet from a shaped charge does not melt its way through armor, as its effect is purely kinetic in nature. When a wormhole was connected to a world orbiting a black hole, it caused time dilation and gravity effects that threatened to destroy Earth. Captain Samantha Carter devised a shaped charge designed to deliver an energy burst into the Earth Stargate, sufficient to overload the gate and divert the wormhole to another address. Colonel Jack O'Neill and Colonel Frank Cromwell managed to rappel close enough to set the charge a short distance from the Stargate and trigger the explosion. Though Cromwell was sucked into the wormhole, the plan worked: the charge detonated and the wormhole jumped from P3W-451 to P2A-870, allowing Captain Carter to shut it down and saving the Earth.
