The show has won the Emmy for "Best Drama Series" in 1998 and 1999 along with winning & being nominated for other awards as well. It has also spawned a spin-off series called "Boston Legal" (which starred James Spader & Rhona Mitra) and lasted from 2004 to 2008. By the end of the show's seventh season & facing low ratings, ABC conditioned the show's renewal on a drastic budget reduction and as a result, six cast members were fired: Dylan McDermott, Kelli Williams, Lara Flynn Boyle, Chyler Leigh, Marla Sokoloff, & Lisa Gay Hamilton. The addition of James Spader and Rhona Mitra to the cast for the eighth season somewhat revived the ratings, but on March 11, 2004, ABC announced that the show would not return for a ninth season.
