The majority of the early official guides were published by NTT Publishing. With Final Fantasy VII, Studio BentStuff was brought on board, working with Famitsu staff and Enterbrain to publish Final Fantasy VII True Script Dissection - The Complete. Beginning with Final Fantasy VIII, Studio BentStuff began writing the Ultimania series of guidebooks published by DigiCube, a subsidiary of Square Co. Ltd. and, later, Square Enix, which also published revised versions of previous guides. Following the bankruptcy of DigiCube in 2003, Studio BentStuff has also taken up mantle of publisher for the Ultimania series, publishing all new guides and reprinting old ones. The Ultimania series guides are perhaps the most well known amongst the English audience, perhaps due to an increasing number of Japanese-literate fans providing translations of the contents for more recent games. The name, a portmanteau of "ultimate" and "mania", signifies the target audience of so-called ultimate "otaku" (maniacs) who are compelled to know every detail about the games. Like previous guides, they are often sub-divided into multiple volumes, targeting specific areas of the game, such as gameplay or scenario information.
