The increase in landmass of British North America led to a large influx of immigrants which in turn led to demands for more control over local affairs, sometime these demands taking the form of riots and localised uprisings. To answer these problems, the North American colonies were eventually granted limited responsible government as the Union of Borealia. While it mostly satisfied the Borealians, it inspired similar movements in other parts of the British Empire - including Scotland. To prevent the movement gathering more strength, the empire was eventually re-organised as a group of self governing kingdoms with each having its own parliament united under an emperor.
