Originating in the Ranet Province, the Costil family was one of the oldest and most successful political families on Naboo. Many of its members could claim some descendant from King Jafan, and had the Naboo/Gungan war not happened when the dynasty died out, causing the need to insure strong leadership, they might have taken over the throne completely.

Officially, Palpatine was a member of this family, though through most of his life he preferred to disassociate himself from them, citing their treatment of his grandmother Supé Costil, as evidenced by his taking on a different "Name of State" from the typical Costil regal name of Okiltine. It is worth noting that during the time of the Empire many members of the Costil family met mysterious deaths, decimating their power in the process. One of the few survivors at the time of the Empire's fall was Mari Costil, who, though born on Naboo, had moved off planet to Chommell Minor, and was the mother of Ederlathh Palldopides. It was remarkable that when Betl Oxtroe proposed a constitutional monarchy she suggested Palldopides for the ceremonial head of state instead of a younger member of the Excenil family, which Palpatine claimed allegiance too through his mother and favored over his father's family, but the Excenil family has faced disgrace on Naboo after the overthrow of the Empire there, and the records still stated Palpatine as being a member of the Costils instead, so it is possible she did not realize the truth of the situation.
