Much of Ruthenia is covered in woodlands. To the east, Ruthenia flows out into tundra and taiga. It is not known what exists beyond its borders in that direction. Ruthenia has neither a unified leadership, nor a national symbol. The nation of Chekov is a vast country to the east of Germanistan. Its main exports are coal and iron ore and it is virtually dominated by Germanistan for a large part of the story, as, while large, it is thinly populated and rural and was not able to defend itself against the organized assault from the west. The population of those parts of the country that are conquered are concentrated in "cities of red brick, from which the black smoke of factory smokestacks piles and curls into the gray, overcast sky day and night". However, the country was never practically defeated, owing to its vast expanse, and eventually rises up in a concerted effort against the invaders, sending Germanistan to the brink of defeat - if not for the appearance of the Nightmare Machine, which virtually exterminates both countries.
