He makes a brief appearance in the first book during a flashback, and is also again seen later when Theta finds a photo of him in the cell during the second book. Unlike Theta's mother, Merriel-Marisol, Kasem cared for Theta and tried to raise him. Unfortunately, it is said Kasem died of radiation sickness, which is what had forced him to leave Theta at an orphanage.
