He became a Devil to gain access to the Underworld in order to train young Dragons and preventing their race from going extinct, as the majority of them are either dead, missing, or sealed in Sacred Gears. It is later revealed in Volume 14 that he is Mephisto Pheles' Queen, making him the first male Queen piece.

- Tannin is a former Dragon King that was given the title of Blaze Meteor Dragon. He was reincarnated as a Devil by Mephisto Pheles, becoming an Ultimate-Class Devil and helped Issei train in order for him to achieve his Balance Breaker. He is a 15 meter tall purple dragon that has a warrior-like personality, taking a dislike to lazy people and cares for his fellow dragons, despite dragons usually being selfish. He once challenged Great Red when he was still a Dragon King, though Great Red simply ignored him. He wanted to be a Devil for 2 reasons: to participate in the Rating Games and to obtain Dragon Apples. These apples are a necessity for a certain species of dragons, since they need them for survival.
